My landlord changed the locks or shut off utilities

General information for New Jersey, New York and Washington, DC · Last updated

Quick answer

A landlord generally cannot use self-help to evict a residential tenant. Seek prompt emergency housing/legal assistance.

Do now

Keep lease, rent receipts, identification, messages, and proof of occupancy available. Document what happened safely. Contact the appropriate local court, legal-aid service, or emergency authority about immediate access relief. NJ Courts has an emergent illegal-lockout process.

Watch for

Do not break in or confront someone dangerously. A lawful officer-enforced eviction and an illegal landlord lockout require different responses.
