Quick answer

Dividing responsibility between spouses does not necessarily release either person from a creditor’s contract.

Do now

List creditor names, account holders, balances, collateral, and payment dates. Obtain credit reports through an authorized source. Ask about account closure, refinancing, allocation, and protections if one spouse fails to pay.

Watch for

Moving a balance or signing a refinance can change rights. Do not stop payments solely because the other spouse informally promised to take over; understand credit, collection, and court-order consequences first.
