Start here: emergencies, deadlines and choosing the right location

General information for New Jersey, New York and Washington, DC · Last updated

If there is immediate danger, a serious injury, a fire, or an urgent threat to a child, call 911. Do not wait for an online answer. For confidential domestic violence support, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. Use a safer device if someone monitors your phone or accounts. Private browsing does not make activity invisible. See digital safety.

If you received court papers, a foreclosure notice, a protection order, a suspension notice, or an eviction date, read the entire document now. Write down when and how you received it, every hearing date, and every response deadline. Talking to an insurer, landlord, lender, spouse, or collector usually does not replace a required court response.

Choose the right location

Use the location connected to the issue, not automatically where you live today. A crash across a state line, a child who recently moved, property in another state, and an out-of-state ticket can involve different courts and rules. DC means the District of Columbia; it does not include Maryland or Virginia. New York City rules are not automatically statewide New York rules. Municipal rent rules, local courts, subsidized housing, and federal programs add further differences.

For bankruptcy, federal law applies, but the proper federal district, property exemptions, local procedures, and your residence history matter. New York has four federal bankruptcy districts; there is no single bankruptcy court for the entire state.
