Where to start for help
NJ: Start with NJ Courts self-help for the proper court process and links to assistance. Use the Family Part for family matters, the municipal court shown on a ticket for traffic matters, and the current landlord-tenant or foreclosure instructions for housing cases. NJDOBI handles insurance consumer resources; NJ Labor handles workers’ compensation information. Court staff can explain procedures but cannot act as your lawyer.
NY: CourtHelp’s family resources and starting a Family Court case explain court routes. Divorce belongs in Supreme Court. The Attorney General’s tenant resources and Good Cause guide explain housing protections. Use DMV TVB only for matters it handles; NYC parking/camera procedures are a separate route. WCB provides work-injury claim information.
DC: DC Courts legal help and Family Court Self-Help provide assistance pathways. The Domestic Violence Division, Office of the Tenant Advocate, Housing Conditions Court, DMV, and DISB foreclosure-prevention program handle different issues. Check current intake hours and availability on the official page before traveling.
Federal/national: Use US Courts bankruptcy resources and the court directory for federal filing routes; DOJ approved counseling information for courses; CFPB and FTC for consumer collection information; HUD’s complaint process for federal fair-housing information; and the National Domestic Violence Hotline for safety planning.
How these sources were used
The research relied on court, legislative, government-agency, and first-party victim-support sources, rather than commercial lead-generation summaries. The register records 113 source entries and identifies the topic each supports. It includes closely related agency pages where they answer different questions. Practical organization and document-gathering steps are original editorial guidance; a citation is not a claim that an agency endorsed this library or evaluated a visitor’s case.
Sources were consulted during this research session using available page text, official PDFs, and official search-index excerpts. This is not a claim that every linked page was fully retrieved, every outbound link was tested, or every legal issue exhaustively researched. Some sites restricted automated retrieval, including the linked Department of Labor QDRO page; indexed agency text and its official publication were consulted instead. Specific access and update cautions appear in the editorial notes. Links may redirect as court websites change. Unless a source is expressly dated below, use its current version when applying it.
