I was involved in a crash and worry about reporting duties

General information for New Jersey, New York and Washington, DC · Last updated

Quick answer

Police, driver, employer, and insurance reporting duties can be separate.

Do now

Check the issuing jurisdiction’s current crash-report requirements and follow responder instructions. Notify insurers promptly and keep the report number and submission confirmations. Seek legal help if there is injury, leaving-scene allegations, or criminal exposure.

Watch for

A police officer’s attendance does not necessarily complete every driver or insurer filing. Do not leave an injury scene or provide false information to simplify a claim.
